The shops, with their large bay windows, must have been quite light and airy.

The plan at first seems enigmatic: the stairways in the rear entrances appear to block the doorways (1). Reference to the sectional drawing, however, clears up the problem. One entered under the landing of the stairs, then passed beneath the upper section of the staircase into a hallway which gave access either to the shop or to the fireplace room behind the shop.
