• American Theatre Architecture Archive, Theatre Historical Society of America. ". . . contains information on more than 13,000 theatres, primarily in the United States."

• American Theatre Web Sites. Useful, but not up-dated since 7/15/99. Posted by Susan Kattwinkel, College of Charleston.

• The Anthaeus Company, links from a project begun at the Mark Taper Forum, a group created "to explore the challenges of establishing and maintaining a classical ensemble in a town rich with actors but dominated by the film and television industry." The site has both great breadth and depth. [Off the WWW as of 12/27/05]

• Arts Books An excellent grab-bag of arts materials: books, music, video, etc. Well worth a visit.

• Anthaeus "Classical Theatre Links." Huge collection of links to essays and artwork from the Ancient World to the present.

• Asian American Theatre Review. Little history here, but an excellent resource for those interested in contemporary Asian-American theatre activity.

• History of the Australian Theatre On Line, a site maintained by Leann Richards, Australian researcher. Australian theatrical ephemera, plus several well documented articles on various topics related to the subject.

• A Brief Guide to Internet Resources in Theatre and Performance Studies © 1998 by Professor Ken McCoy, a professor in the Stetson University department of Communication Studies and Theatre Arts. Excellent resources.

  C

• Atlantic Canada Theatre Site. 19th century playbills, performance calendars, theatre research in Canada, scripts and documents in electronic form. Totally searchable: fast and efficient.

• Canadian Theatre History - Bibliographies. John Ball and Richard Plant, editors.

• "Connected Courseware® was created in 1994 in order to provide University level course material on the web for a worldwide audience." In addition to such on-line courses as Theatre History, Performance Theory, Sound for the Stage, Caribbean Theatre and Introduction to Theatre, this site -- maintained by Professor Patrick Finelli, University of South Florida -- includes links to topics such as text books and general books, Broadway and film music recordings, web site reviews and resume and letter writing.

• Halifax Theatre History. From Artillery to Zuppa Circus: Recorded memory of theatre life in Nova Scotia, "developed from the collections at the Dalhousie Archives and from theatre community organizations."

• AltaVista Film and Entertainment Archives. Be sure to follow all the various links on the Index Bar of this page. "History and Studies", for example, leads to an excellent index containing resources for both film and entertainment. Includes topics such as Gay and Lesbian Film, Women in Film, Art and Culture, Books and Authors, and Actors and Directors.

• History of Performance Studies. A site devoted to student web papers on the history of performance, moderated by Professor Kelly Taylor, Department of Communication Studies, University of North Texas.

• International Theatre Design Archive - Formerly "Project 2000". Excellent theatre information, contemporary and historical, compiled by C. Otis Sweezey, USITT

• International Theatre Resources, a collection of very useful links, maintained by Richard Finkelstein, Head of Design, College of Arts and Media, Department of Theatre, Film, and Video Production, University of Colorado at Denver.

• Internet Archive. Like any library, somewhat complex to navigate but well worth the effort. This link to James Robinson Planché (1794-1880), the 19th century playwright, for example, illustrate the holdings well. Robinson's works on the site can be downloaded in their entirety as .pdf files.

• The Internet Public Library, formerly The Argus Clearinghouse. A strange, somewhat un targeted site now, but the Exhibits section often has some excellent links.

  • FetchBook, an excellent resource for finding the best book prices on the WWW.

  • The Internet History Sourcebooks Project is edited by Paul Halsall, Fordham University. Ancient History Source Book, its Medieval History Sourcebook, Internet Modern History Source Book and its African, Indian, Islamic, Jewish, LGBT, Women's, Global and Science source books as well. This is a wonderful resource!

  • Luminarium Book Store. A commercial site, listing a great many Medieval Text resources.

  • Musical Theatre Resources. An Artslynx project.

  • The University of British Columbia LibrarySources for Book, Film and Theatre Reviews

  • College of William and Mary, Earl Gregg Swem Library Theatre Subject Guide. The database was created by Bettina Manzo, Reference Librarian. Good eclectic listings, dealing with every aspect of the theatre.

  London HQ: "categorized resource directory for everything about London." Includes good theatre sections with links to contemporary and historical London materials.

• Musical Theatre History Resources, a site maintained by Adam Czyk and the New Tuners Theatre, Chicago Ill. A good site for basic information. [This site is off-line as of 5/13/03]

  P

• Proofsheet "a unique and growing archive of theatre publicity photos from The Joseph Papp Public Theater, New York Shakespeare Festival, The Guthrie Theater, and others." Maintained by Michal Daniel, photographer.

  Observations On The Historical Development Of Puppetry, an online essay by Keith Rawlings, November 1999, updated April 2003. There is an excellent bibliography at the conclusion of the essay.

• Life and Times of Actress EJ Phillips (1880s & 1890s); "Her dramatic career, cross-country travels, family life, Golden Age of the American theatre & Arrival of the 20th century." The site created by Em Turner Nickinson Kuhl and Mary Glen Kuhl Chitty. This site is a treasury of late 19th century American theatrical information, with copious links to major theatrical figures, theatres and productions of the period.

  R

• ReadPrint, a free on-line library; includes the complete works of Shakespeare, plus numerous other authors and their works.

• Historical Research Links, a publicly accessible page devoted to theatre research links, part of Rogues and Vagabonds, a free/subscription on-line newspaper devoted to numerous aspects of the theatre, with excellent up-to-date information about the British theatre scene.

• Scottish Theatre Archive. University of Glasgow Library Special Collections in theatre. Holdings include entries for "companies and festivals, artists, theatre programmes, scripts, people and design collections."

• theatreSCOTLAND:, Home of Scottish Theatre. A gateway to activity in the Scottish theatre, updated daily. Not historical, but an excellent resource for contemporary theatre activity in Scotland. The site is maintained by Mark Fisher.

  T

• Theatrehistory.com, a wildly eclectic commercial site, with links to books, articles, sheet music, etc., from every century. Worth a visit in desperation, or for fun.

• Theatre Links, a site maintained by BUBL Information Service, Centre for Digital Library Research, Strathclyde University, 101 St James Road, Glasgow G4 0NS, Scotland. Be sure to explore the entire site.

  Theatre Studies Research Guide, Yale University. Rich in links.

• Theatron. This site, based in the UK, has an excellent link to 3D drawings of Florimène, as well as similar drawings of theatres in the classical world. To access these links, click "Gallery" on the homepage. It is also the link to major UK and European activity in the field of Virtual Reality and 3D architectural imaging. A very fine site.

• Theatrum. This Spanish site has excellent links to theatres and performance activities throughout the world.

• This Month in Theatre History an interesting site maintained by Professor Richard Finkelstein (University of Denver). Day by day listing of theatre events of the month, past and present, with links to history, music, dance and theatre library and research resources.

• WWW Virtual Library: Theatre and Drama -- Theatre Images. Illustrations from throughout the theatre world.

• University of Maryland University Libraries: Theatre. "This is a guide to the important reference sources for research in the field of Theatre."

• Vitruvio.ch Links to sites presenting general history as well as theatre historical sites -- e.g., the Teatro Farnese, in a 360 degree panoramic virtual tour. Excellent pictorial resources for virtual every century.

• The Dance Music Resource Pages Issue 268.0: 4 - 10 June 2001 "These pages are updated weekly to contain a complete listing of new UK dance releases. Buy records on line, searchable catalog, listen online with mp3 clips of selected tracks."

• Dance Plus - Strict Time Ballroom Dance Music. "Your source for comprehensive information on the largest selection of strict time ballroom dance music. Canadian ballroom dance supply company that sells strict-time ballroom dance CDs from all over the world."

• Grand Chain Scottish Dancing Resource Pages. "The Edinburgh Scottish Dance Resource. Pages for Scottish Dancers everywhere."

• Highland and Scottish Step Dance resource pages.

• International Folk Dance Resource Guide. "People all over the world express their ethnic traditions through dance." [12/27/01 This site has been removed from the web as of this date. Please let me know if you find it at a later date.]

• Life Magazine. This is an extremely valuable site, one well worth exploring if you have an interest in contemporary dance. [05/20/09: Use the "search" feature for best results.]

• Middle Eastern Dance Resource Guide " (also known as belly dance, danse orientale, etc.)." "Very informative belly dancing web site. FAQs, World-wide teachers listing, vendor listing, and contacts".

• Field Template A source for lighting design templates.

• The Academy of Theatrical Combat, an excellent source of information relating to stage combat and its accoutrements.

• History of the Australian Theatre On Line, a site maintained by Leann Richards, Australian researcher. Australian theatrical ephemera, plus several well documented articles on various topics related to the subject.

• Alberta , Canada Theatre Performance Calendar: 1885-1990

• THEATRON-Theatre History in Europe, Theatron Ltd. "Theatron Limited is a small, dynamic company specializing in the field of virtual reality and multimedia for cultural heritage clients." This company produces some of the finest computer generated models of ancient theatres and related sites that I have ever seen.

• Italian Theatre Web Sites

• Instituto das Artes (antigo IPAE) Theatre in Portugal and the World. Excellent links to theatre web sites and resources.
