    Borders: Unframed cloth strips hung abover the stage floor, running from stage left to right. Borders, which typically were painted to suggest the sky or the ceiling of a room, served to mask (hide from view) the tops of the wings, and to blend the foreground of the setting with the backshutter or backdrop.
