The stage floor for Florimène was raked: that is, it sloped from downstage to the backshutter bank. Here there was a drop of six inches, to a flat floor in the relief and crossover area.

We can only speculate, but it seems probably that the flat floor was a concession to actors waiting in the wings, or using the crossover to move from stage left to right.

The change in elevation -- from 5'6" at the rear of the rake to 5'0" on the level floor -- was employed as a means of masking (hiding) the bottom of the backshutter bank, shown in the illustration in blue, and the scenic pieces standing in the relief area.
